For months I told myself I'd leave my job "when my business was making enough." But I never actually defined what "enough" meant.
I knew my salary. But I didn't factor in what my employer quietly pays on top of that - superannuation, insurance, leave, the security of a steady income. When I finally added it all up, my true employment value was significantly higher than my take-home pay. That changed everything.
Then I ran the other side. I looked at what my business was actually netting after tools, after tax, after the invisible costs I kept ignoring. The real number was lower than I thought.
The gap between those two figures? That was the answer to "am I ready to leave my job."
And once I could see the gap clearly, with real numbers, not estimates, I could actually make a plan to close it. I knew exactly what my floor was - the minimum viable revenue I would need to reach, what comfortable looked like, and what confident felt like. I could see how many sales I needed per month at my price point. I could see a timeline.
That calculation is this spreadsheet. I built it for myself. Now it's yours.
6 steps to your exit plan.
A colour-coded start here guide tab so you know exactly what to enter and what the tool does for you. Simple setup, clear navigation. Takes 2 minutes to orient yourself before you start.
Step 1: My Employment Picture This is the tab that surprises people. Enter your salary, and the tool calculates your true employment value including your employer's superannuation contribution, health insurance, phone and transport allowances, leave entitlements, and the safety net buffer you'd need to feel safe leaving.
Most people discover their number is 20–40% higher than their take-home pay. This is the number your business has to match.
Step 2: My Business Numbers Enter your current business revenue by income type (digital products, coaching, affiliate, events) and your actual business expenses. The tool deducts expenses and a tax set-aside to calculate your real business net, the honest figure, not the gross revenue number that feels better than it is.
Step 3: The Gap (auto-calculated) This tab does the maths for you. It shows you exactly where you stand: your true employment value vs. your real business net, and the gap between them. Then it gives you three specific targets:
🟡 Floor: Minimum viable (80% of True Employment Value - you'd be okay but lean)
🟢 Comfortable: Full replacement (matches your True Employment Value like-for-like)
🔵 Confident: Full safety (25% above TEV - covers variable income and unexpected costs) These aren't guess targets. They're calculated from your actual numbers.
Step 4: First Income Plan Enter your primary offer price, current email list size, and estimated conversion rate. The calculator shows you exactly how many sales you need per month to hit each milestone and what list size you'd need to generate that at your current rates. It also calculates your 90-day first income target. These numbers make the goal specific and actionable instead of abstract.
Step 5: My Timeline Choose your transition window: 12 months, 18 months, or 24 months. The tool generates a month-by-month revenue milestone plan showing what "on track" looks like at every point with key decision checkpoints at months 3, 6, 9, 12, and the final transition review.
Step 6: CEO Commitment Your one-page summary. Auto-fills your key numbers from all previous tabs, then gives you space to record your target transition date, 90-day revenue focus, primary offer, list growth channel, this week's one action, and what you're letting go of to make space. Screenshot it. Print it. Pin it somewhere.

I'm a business and leadership coach with 18 years of public service leadership experience and a Masters in Entrepreneurship. I'm still in my 9-to-5, building this business in real time, and I built every tool in my suite for myself first because I needed it to actually work alongside a demanding career, a young family, and a fixed number of hours in the day.
The From Salary to Sales Calculator is the tool I wish I'd had a year ago. It would have saved me a lot of "am I ready?" paralysis.
